BenBella
Books
BenBella produces a wonderful nonfiction series called SmartPop,
which takes a fun look at pop culture phenomenons, including
television shows, movies, and (new) comics. Here are the
volumes I've contributed to (or will in 2005):
Seven Seasons of Buffy. Essay: "Is That Your
Final Answer?" -- in which a demon on his final exam mathematically
proves that Xander Harris is, indeed, the most powerful force for
good in Sunnydale, that whole Slayer thing notwithstanding.
Five Seasons of Angel. Essay: "Welcome To
Wolfram & Hart: The Semi-Complete Guide to Evil" -- in which
the forces for Good(TM) expose the contents of a W&H lawyer's
briefcase ... including the employment manual. It's eerily
like the corporate world we know and love.
Stepping Through the Stargate. (co-edited with
P.N. Elrod)
Essay: "When in Rome, Don't Wear That" -- a fashion-centric
guide to the Stargate universe. Bad, good, or indifferent,
everybody has a style. We point out the ups and downs of
intergalactic couture ...
What Would Sipowicz Do? Race, Rights & Redemption in NYPD Blue.
Essay: "Extra Points for Strippers: The Existential Cop
Show Scoring System" -- in which we compare and award totally
arbitrary points for the essential elements of the modern cop show
... like setting an episode in a strip bar.
Finding Serenity: Anti-Heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space
Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly. Essay:
"Mirror, Mirror - A Parody" -- for which I will no doubt go to Hell,
because I compare (unfavorably) the latest incarnation of Star
Trek's franchise (Enterprise) with the crew of Serenity. In
short: everybody on board the Enterprise is wearing a red
shirt.
Alias Assumed: Sex, Lies and SD-6. Essay:
"They Scanned Our Brainwaves From Orbit" -- for which I will go to
Hell even more for pointing out that SD-6 actually took over
the Alias set for an episode that not only made no sense, but
actively rotted our minds. (forthcoming)
Farscape Forever. Essay: "How To Eat Like A
Hynerian On A Peacekeeper's Budget: A Travel Guide to the
Farscape Universe" -- and basically, it's like Zaget's on acid.
Which is, truth be told, just about like Farscape itself.
Contains special features like "Hostage or Guest: How to Tell
The Difference" and helpful tips on avoiding danger in Tormented
Space (here's a hint: DON'T GO, you fool!).
(forthcoming)
Mapping the World of Harry Potter. "The Proper Wizard's
Guide to Conduct in the Non-Magical World: A M*ggle Tells All"
-- a "non-wizarding person" (apparently, it's no longer politically
correct to refer to them as "Muggles") critiques one of the most
cherished guides to wizarding conduct ... and finds they get things
completely wrong. It's no wonder wizards look so daft.
and, no doubt, more to come .... if BenBella doesn't come to their
senses first.
Recent Novels:
EXILE,
TEXAS ... Sheriff's Deputy Dan Fox doesn't expect trouble when he
pulls over a speeder outside of the lonely West Texas town of Exile . . . but he gets it
in the form of Megan Leary. Meg -- an Exile native -- was acquitted of her mother's brutal
slaying fifteen years ago, but many residents still believe in her guilt. As Meg helps a
friend find her missing daughter, the bodies start to fall. As enemies begin coming out of
the woodwork in the formerly sleepy Texas town, Dan and Meg have to band together for
their very survival, because there are still long-buried secrets that someone will kill to
keep hidden in Exile, Texas.
"Once Meg speeds into town, the story line never eases off the
accelerator. Meg is a strong protagonist and a bewildered Dan is an ideal sidekick. Fans
will enjoy Roxanne Longstreet's fast-paced multiple murder mystery." -- Harriet

you'll find something that looks remarkably like this:
Which, if you like my books, you may like as well. It's
the first of a new series, which I have it on good authority is a whole lot of
fun.
